A Platform for the Study of Societies, Cultures and Economic Development

THE RATIONALE

In recent years a number of national and international scholars interested in the Northeastern region developed various approaches to studying socialites and cultures in the region. An emerging understanding is that the social sciences and humanities disciplines in their strict boundaries are no longer adequate to analyse the complex problems of our times. The crucial problems of ‘underdevelopment’ confronting us in the Northeast in comparison to other parts of India and to lesser developed countries in our neighborhood call for in-depth inquiries about the main components of our societies such as gender, caste, creed, community and ethnicity. The Northeast projects will focus on these diverse facets of societies in the region.
